How to Make Mexican Cheese Dip Restaurant Style
My Restaurant Style Queso is cooked in the slow cooker till it is smooth, cheesy, and creamy. Studded with green chiles and onions, and poured over chips makes a delicious queso blanco dip everyone will love.
Mmmmmm……queso….. Seriously make sure you think it with a Homer Simpson voice- it makes it even better.
I love the creamy cheesy queso dip from my favorite Mexican restaurant, and we always order it when we get take-out. However, I love to create restaurant favorites at home for my family to enjoy.
My Restaurant Style Queso is a dip that will keep you coming back for more, and everyone asking for the recipe. The queso uses white cheese and cooks in the slow cooker. Using the slow cooker to make queso cheese dip allows for slow and low heat to gently cook the dip, and prevent burning or scorching.
I use a white american style cheese, like Velveeta quesco blanco, and monterrey jack cheese. Chopped green chiles add a little spice, but diced jalapenos can also be used in place of the chilis for extra heat.
The end result is a super smooth and creamy queso cheese sauce that is perfect for dipping, over a burrito, on tacos, or poured over a big plate of nachos.
Restaurant Style Queso is one of my favorite recipes to make for taco night with friends, or for an easy game day appetizer.
Ingredients
- white onion- it is important to finely chop the onion for there are not large pieces
- diced green chiles - the chiles can be substituted for diced jalapeno
- white American cheese (like Velveeta Queso Blanco)- See the notes on cheese below
- Monterrey Jack cheese
- whole milk- heavy cream can be substituted for whole milk for an even richer queso dip
- Tortilla Chips
- mini slow cooker (1.5 quart)- If using a larger slow cooker the cook time will be shorter.
- Optional ingredients- chopped tomatoes, green onion, chopped cilantro, diced mushrooms, or browned chorizo are great options to add to the dip.
Let's Talk Cheese
A white processed American style cheese works best for this recipe. It will result in the smoothest texture without separation or stringy dip. I also like the monterrey jack cheese for the same reasons, and it has a mild flavor so the flavors from the chili and onion come out in the dip.
If you want to use a different cheese it will impact the texture of the Restaurant Style Queso. I have used grated American cheese, and the result was delicious in flavor, but not as smooth.
Instructions
- Place all ingredients into a small (1.5 quart) slow cooker.
- Cook on low for 2 hours, stirring every 30 minutes.
- Set heat to low and serve with chips.
Alternative preparation: queso blanco dip ingredients can be placed in a microwave safe dish to heat. Heat in 30 second intervals, stirring at each one, and serve. The dip will cool fast and it can be kept warm in a slow cooker, or on the stovetop on low heat. If it is kept warm on stovetop, make sure to stir frequently.
